Guterres’ Message on International Women’s Day 2019

On 8 March 2019, UN Secretary-General António Guterres sent a message to the world at the UN Observance of International Women’s Day 2019, New York: Gender equality and women’s rights are fundamental to global progress on peace and security, human rights and sustainable development. We can only re-establish trust in institutions, rebuild global solidarity and reap the benefits of diverse perspectives by challenging historic injustices and promoting the rights and dignity of all. In recent decades, we have seen remarkable progress on women’s rights and leadership in some areas. But these gains are far from complete or consistent –…

5G and Huawei Complex

5G and Huawei Complex 5G, the latest generation of cellular mobile communications, has been a hot topic worldwide, both technologically and politically. The latter tightly connected to a series of happenings to Huawei, the world’s largest manufacturer of telecommunications equipment. Wiki describes 5G performance as targetinghigh data rate, reduced latency, energy saving, cost reduction, higher system capacityand massive device connectivity.Concepts like virtual reality, augmented reality and machine-to-machine interaction in the Internet of Things (for example, the optimization of autonomous vehicles, i.g. driverless cars) are all vital in the 5G context. 5G is nevertheless by far as mature as how many…

Is Lady ZI Zhongjun an Old Cynic?

Is Lady ZI Zhongjun an Old Cynic?   Today the social media group composed of my university colleagues underwent an interesting, if not bitter, discussion about who Ms Zi Zhongjun is. Having experienced incredible ups and downs in her life, this extraordinarily talented lady has become a well-known critic with her sharp-eyed, deep-going, relentless and passionate arguments on current issues home and abroad. Some believe she is no more than an old cynic who let out her anger in a destructive way, probably only to harm her own mental health. Some insist she is inspiring in truth-finding, using her influence…

Vienna Sound of Spring Concert Re-Defining Chinese Love of Golden Hall

Vienna Sound of Spring Concert Re-Defining Chinese Love of Golden Hall On the evening of February 3, the Golden Hall of the Vienna Musicians Association Mansion held a “Vienna Sound of Spring Concert”, in which three Chinese classics were introduced between the traditional Waltz pieces. As a result, the concert turned beautifully into a gift from Austrian musicians to the Chinese Lunar New Year. That night, 2 days before the beginning of the Year of the Pig, the Golden Hall was almost wholly packed, leaving no room in the standing-tickets area either. An emotional evening enshrouded in joy, indeed. The…

Approaching the World of Birdhead in Vienna

Birdhead in Vienna   A recent exhibition in Vienna showed the unique art ideas of Birdhead,  which aroused a big interest in understanding the fleeting, mysterious yet real mentality of today’s Shanghai. The interpretation of SCHIFFAMT building in the 2. district of Vienna through the Asian eyes was yet another highlight for the opening ceremony. Birdhead (Song Tao *1979 and Ji Weiyu *1980) have been working together and debating daily since 2004. They are taking over 10,000 photos every year, which are scanned and archived before re-appearing, in small numbers, in their work. No one is familiar with the Birdhead…

Xinjiang’s New Era: A Brief Look Into Corps System

China’s West Region, a historical treasure along the ancient silk road, was renamed Xinjiang, literally meaning new territory, in the year of 1949. Peacefully entering a new era, Xinjiang went through decades of economical re-adjustment as well as administrative re-organization. The so-called „Corps“, a new type of administration coming into being since 1954 with the full name of Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps, is based on Defense and Production Forces of PLA in 1953. With the initial goal of achieving self-sufficiency in grain and non-staple food supply,  the Corps both functions as frontier garrison force and production units. The Corps…

Ningxia, A Wine Paradise in China

Recently, a trip to Ningxia became a fascinating wine-tasting experience for me. A bottle of red wine there made me believe I was back in Bordeaux. It was a cuvee with 80% of Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% of Merlot and 5% of Cabernet Gernischt. Pure joy with absolute high quality! In the following days, more wine with Merlot, Sirah and Cabernet attracted my attention, leaving me crave for some research into this wine paradise in China. Among the eight main wine producing areas in China, Ningxia, located in the middle of Chinese territory, is obviously the most suitable for grape planting…

Stealing Heaven

The Chinese artist Ms Jing SONG has just had a solo art exhibition in Vienna with “STEALING HEAVEN” as the motif. STEALING HEAVEN is devoted to the moment at which a particular development culminates and in the end breaks off. The project tells of life in a state of wind-stillness, of circumstances to which one has accustomed oneself, of tranquil presence, trance; up to a point of realization or action. A moment of rupture in which the self is both the shipwrecked castaway and the onlooker. (1)Seconds, minutes or years can pass before the eyes open. “[…] We all want to…
