Matinee by Kehua Pioneer Choir from Shenzhen Successfully Held in Vienna to Celebrate the Year of Dragon

On 14.02.2024, Kehua Pioneer Choir from Shenzhen held a Matinee at the Chinese Culture and Art Center in Vienna, bringing the audience a cheerful, happy-go-lucky occasion for the Valentine’s Day which is by chance the day for the God of Fortune during the Chinese Spring Festival 2024, the Lunar Dragon Year.

The choir presented a diversified song collection in Chinese, English and German for the audience including “Day Lilies”, “Cold Snap”, “Longing for Spring” (“Sehnsucht nach Frühling” von Mozart), the Yi Ethnic Song “Take Me to the Top of the Mountain”, “By the Butterfly Spring”, “Facial Mask Song” and a beautifully constructed medley in the end.

While Shenzhen and Salzburg are actively exchanging with each other to establish a city to city friendship, cultural events become bridges to promote related cooperation. This year, Austria-Salzburg Art Education Alliance is inviting Nanshan Foreign Language School (Group) Kehua Pioneer Choir to hold a special concert in Salzburg during the “Mozartwoche” to present Shenzhen and its Nanshan District, showcasing the elegant vigour of the young people living there.

Shenzhen is a major city in southern China. It is a part of Guangdong province and one of the most important economic centers in the country. Located on the coast of the South China Sea, Shenzhen is known as one of the most dynamic and rapidly developing cities in the world. It is renowned for its rapid economic growth, technological innovation, and thriving business environment. As one of China’s major cities, Shenzhen plays a pivotal role in the country’s modernization and global economic integration.

The name “Shenzhen” first appeared in historical records during the Ming Dynasty in the eighth year of Yongle (1410). It was designated as a special economic zone in 1980, which is the first economic special zone established in China, serving as a window for China’s reform and opening-up policies and evolving into a new immigrant city.

Nanshan District in Shenzhen is a thriving urban area situated in the heart of Shenzhen City, Guangdong Province, China. Known for its modernity and technological innovation, Nanshan is home to many high-tech companies, research institutions, and universities. In this district, Shenzhen Nanshan Foreign Language School (Group) Kehua School was founded in September 2018. It is a nine-year public school featuring international innovation, a high-leveled member school of the Nanshan Foreign Language School Group. With a fundamental mission of “nurturing virtue and cultivating individuals,” the school aims to be an academic and outstanding school, fostering internationally innovative talents. “Kind, Healthy, Special” is the characteristics of each individual associated with Kehua.

Since its establishment, Kehua Pioneer Choir has often participated in various district, school and community performances. The choir’s repertoire ranges from traditional folk songs to modern compositions, encompassing a diverse array of styles and genres, such as Chinese folk songs, operas, ballads, pop music, jazz, rap, art songs and other Chinese and foreign musical works.

Kehua Pioneer Choir is made up of students from grade 3 to 8 who share the love of music and vocal expression. Members are all professionally trained. This group was established to enhance students’ musical literacy and teamwork abilities through choral training and performance. With the support of Nanshan Foreign Language School (Group) Kehua School, the performance was led by Ms. Zhao Jin, with Miss Gao Qun as the conductor and Miss Cao Yu as the piano accompanist.

Before the Matinee, the choir paid a visit in the morning to the Bösendorfer Salon located in the city center of Vienna. There, they listened to the history of the famous, 150-year-old piano brand, enjoyed the exquisite and warm sound of Bösendorfer with works by Edvard Grieg played by a young Austrian pianist who was going to have her solo performance that evening, and a modern piece called “Under the Water” by a Bösendorfer pianist who remodulated a piano to experiment new sounds with it. The highlight of the visit included a close look at the special features of the instrument, as well as a historical piano in exhibition manufactured in 1858, one of the first upright pianos in the world.
